Art Outreach Programs

This outreach program, held at Heritage Park, is made possible by a grant from FY26 Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund - SMALL Grants grant opportunity of The Community Foundation. Senior and youth classes are taught by Cathy Ambrose Smith, Art Outreach Coordinator

In 2014, FCCA began the Art Outreach Programs in the city of Fredericksburg at both Hazel Hill and Heritage Park under the leadership of member Cathy Ambrose Smith.

These programs offer free art lessons to seniors as well as the youth in monthly classes. Over the years, a wide variety of art techniques have been introduced to the students. These range from basic painting and three dimensional constructions to group projects exploring areas such as mosaics and the study of prominent artists. The art classes cover the fundamental thought processes and techniques for creating artistic pieces that can be translated to creative work outside of their classroom.

Art compels students to think! That's exactly what the students at Heritage Park & Hazel Hill have been doing while these children participate in FCCA’s Art Outreach programs. The art lessons offer a wide variety of media from painting to mixed media. These monthly classes help develop the children’s collaboration, fine motor skills, as well as build self esteem, confidence plus several math skills. Entering our 11th year, FCCA’s Art Outreach also sponsors art classes to seniors at both HUD housing units in the city of Fredericksburg, It is solely funded by grants, monetary and art supply donations. Children from Hazel Hill and Heritage Park communities use colored pencil sets and sketch pads given to them by the FCCA.  Under the direction of Cathy Ambrose Smith, Jan. 19-20, they worked on artwork for their June Art Show. FCCA’s Youth Art Program is funded entirely by donations. There is no cost to students, and FCCA covers  the cost of instruction and supplies via donations and grants.
