Timeless -- Rebecca Carpenter.
Time – a theme I’ve explored extensively for the last ten years in my photography, collage, and sculptural art. Both my mother and father had illnesses that robbed them of their memories. I became their memory and a storyteller of their past. I was forced to be still and pause time because their concept of time was everchanging.
I looked through their photo albums and scrapbooks so often that I was drawn to using some of those photos in my work. I also began collecting vintage timepieces and a new series was born. I took portraits of a variety of people and digitally composited vintage clock and watch parts with the photographs. As the series progressed, some two-dimensional Timeless portraits became three-dimensional portraits and physical collages. I tried to capture a diverse compilation of expressive portraits that incorporate unique vintage parts. I invite you to find aspects of yourself in each of the portraits.
Some of the concepts I explored include moving forward, looking back, being present in the moment, ever changing feelings of time based on what’s going on in our lives, existence, the measurement of seconds, minutes, hours, days, time flying or standing still, stages of growth and change – birth to death, memories, legacy, expectations, generations, life beyond (what’s next), looking forward (the remainder), clarity, vulnerability, forgiveness, understanding, chaos, invisibility, the struggle of life’s paths.

I have multiple series with my photography, including fine art figure photographs, fine art conceptual photography, landscape/flower photography, and abandoned spaces photography. I also have a series of abstract and landscape paintings and mixed-media collages. I have started creating a new series of abstracted landscapes in encaustic and look forward to building a new series in 2025-2026.
A Little Bio
I was born and grew up in North Carolina. I went to college at ASU in Boone, where I met my husband. He was commissioned into the Army after college, and I taught art K-12 for many years. We traveled around for 30 years in the Army. We lived in Stafford for 15 of the 30 years, but moved to Maryland after the Army, and currently we live in Pennsylvania. Our daughter lives in Philly and we’ve moved up to a rural area west of the city.
For many years I created mainly with pencils, paint, and collage. I became seriously interested in photography about 20 years ago and soon saw the possibilities of thinking and working in a series. I enjoy seeing the possibilities in playing with materials and I’m so happy to present this multi-media “Timeless” exhibit at FCCA.
