Joan Stanton

Joan Stanton lives in Virgina. Her current mediums are gouache, watercolor pencil and occasionally water-based oils and graphite pencil. She also creates digital art and uses photography for inspiration and the basis for most of her artwork.

Joan was taught and influenced by her father, Milton L. Jones, a self-taught artist. He mentored and encouraged her to draw and paint in oils. She started out drawing primarily animals and faces. Some in color and others in pencil. Joan spent her junior high and high school years in Florida drawing and painting wildlife and making sculptured pots.

She was selected for the Gifted Art Program while in high school and took art courses at Okaloosa Walton Jr. College. She received commissions for paintings and drawings during that time. Joan joined the Air Force and painted murals with other artists during her free time. She met her husband, also in the Air Force, and eventually moved to upstate New York where she attended Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute and took some drawing courses.

Since moving to Virginia, she attended the Matt Tommey Thriving Christian Artist Gathering of Artists and completed some of his courses. She completed “Flying Lesson” a gouache course with Deana Maree.

Joan is always studying new ways to improve her art skills. Joan’s goal is to create art that brings hope and delight to people and encourages them to look at people and wildlife with appreciation.
