Description:
Fredericksburg is rich in colonial and post-colonial history. It is depicted in its styled and folk architecture. This colonial era is also rich in painting. The painting and painters of this time, c.1630 to 1830, became passé and collectors and museums wanted European art. Not until the early 1930’s did art historians and later collectors begin to recognize the richness of this time. In this talk we will discuss the education of the painters, how and why this education resulted in the style of their paintings. The Colonial Master Painters, their life and art will be discussed, plus, time permitting, other Colonial painters.
